BC tuition refund
calculator

Work out the minimum tuition refund the BC Private Training Regulation requires when a student withdraws, is dismissed, doesn’t show, or has a study permit refused. Built straight from the PTIRU Policy Manual — accurate as of 3 November 2025.

The PTIRU minimum is open to everyone. Enter your own published policy to calculate refunds your way — and we’ll flag anything that falls below the legal minimum.

Your policy — % of tuition the school keeps

Pre-filled with the legal minimum. Lower a number to be more generous; raising one above the legal maximum is flagged as non-compliant.

Approved programs follow the full refund schedule. Programs that don’t require approval have far narrower protection.

Any in-person or live-scheduled part (including hybrid/blended) uses the first option. Only fully self-paced online programs use the second — they’re measured by hours completed, and the no-show rule doesn’t apply.

Tuition the student pays under the contract, after any scholarship or discount. Don’t include application or material fees.

The refund schedule is the same for domestic and international students. “Study permit refused” applies only to international students who needed a permit — if it’s refused before the 30% point, the full tuition is refunded.

7 days or fewer (and before the start date) is a full refund.

7 days or fewer caps what the school can keep at 10% (max $1,000).

Percentage measured by hours of instruction (the legal basis), 0–100.

This is only an estimate — calendar time rarely matches instruction hours. Use real hours when you have them.

Flight / aviation school? Add aircraft fees

Aircraft utilization fees aren’t tuition. Any unused balance is refunded in full on withdrawal, dismissal, or no-show — on top of the tuition refund.

By generating the worksheet you accept the Terms of use & disclaimer — an estimate of the statutory minimum, not legal advice, provided without warranty.

Built on the current rules. The BC Private Training Regulation was last amended 1 January 2025, and many tuition-refund policies published online still show the old schedule. This calculator uses the version in the PTIRU Private Training Act Policy Manual published 3 November 2025, and tells you which rule applied to each result.

This calculator estimates the minimum tuition refund the regulation requires (the most an institution may keep). Your institution’s own published policy may return more, and you must apply your own policy. Percentages are measured by hours of instruction; date-based figures are estimates only. This tool is provided for general information, is not legal advice, and does not bind PTIRU — in any dispute, PTIRU’s determination and the current regulation govern. Verify against the current PTIRU Policy Manual.
